Cut the onions into thin slices.

In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat and add the onions. Cook until golden brown.

Add the minced garlic and continue cooking for 2 minutes.

Add the chicken stock and simmer for 20 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F).

In ovenproof bowls, place slices of bread and cover them with the soup.
